Brown Trout Beauty Wins April Contest - 12 Months of Master Angler
Congratulations to Trevor Hominick! His Master Angler brown trout action photo was selected as the winner of the April edition of the 12 Months of Master Angler photo contest.
He has won a $1000 gift card to Cabela’s along with a pile of awesome HuntFishMB gear.

April is a transition month in Manitoba. During the first half of the month, anglers typically capitalize on the incredible late-ice opportunities in the Northern Region or target still frozen trout waters in the southern half of the province. With each passing day, open water fishing is gradually ushered in. It is not unusual at this time of year to be fishing on ice one day and then be casting into open water the next. For avid angler Trevor Hominick, he achieved catching a couple Master Angler trout both through the ice and casting from shore, on the very same day!

We asked Trevor to recount the story behind his winning photo brown trout catch. “We were about to head home after a day of ice fishing on Twin Lake. My buddy suggested that we should go try nearby Persse Lake for a bit.” Trevor is pictured above with a Master Angler tiger trout from earlier that day. “It just so happened to be that there was open water there. I casted out a perch jerkbait from shore when this brown came out of nowhere and just inhaled it!”

An accomplished multi-species angler, Trevor has achieved the Platinum Level in the Master Angler Program which recognizes him as having caught a trophy fish in fifteen different species. He has a Specialist Badge (minimum five Master Angler catches) for ten different species and is on the cusp of achieving his specialist for Yellow Perch. “I came very close to getting that fifth perch several times this past season. Hopefully I can get it this year.”

The Brandon, MB resident shared that his favourite waters to fish are the stocked trout lakes in the Parkland Region. “I fish a bunch of those lakes all of the time. The Duck Mountain lakes especially since it’s so gorgeous up there.” A very close second after “…any trout species” he said is targeting common carp. “On opening day (May 11) the plan is to head to the Whitemud River actually to hook into some carp and hopefully a few big freshwater drum.”

When pressed for what he has planned for the $1000 gift card to Cabela’s, Trevor narrowed down his shopping list to buying more ice fishing toys. “An Aqua-vu would be really nice to have. Maybe some kind of automatic fisherman set-up. Actually Brianne (Leys) and I have a set of rain jackets that she got us when she won the contest more than a year ago. I think I’ll get us the matching pants.”
