Destination Spotlight: Lake of the Prairies, Walleye Madness!
Great Manitoba walleye destinations are certainly no secret to the avid local angler, nor to the thousands of die-hard walleye warriors that choose to visit our province every year.
But finding a location that offers something for everyone with convenient access to over thirty miles of exceptional angling is sometimes easier said than done.
The Shellmouth Reservoir, AKA- "Lake of the Prairies”, is a dammed section of the Assiniboine River that’s located parallel to the western border within Manitoba’s Parkland Region. Home to an extraordinary walleye population, Lake of the Prairies is considered one of the top walleye fisheries in Canada. A slot limit that requires all walleye between 18 and 28 inches be released, has significantly contributed to developing and sustaining such an amazing fishery, not only in catchable numbers but in remarkable average sizes. It’s common to land numerous eyes in the 22 to 26 inch range and at the same time have real opportunities at 28 inch plus giants.
Equal to its amazing fishing are the attractive accommodation options that cater to everyone, from that once a year guys getaway to the multi generation family vacation. Overnight and seasonal campsites, cabin rentals and full service seasonal resorts compliment this unique destination making it easy to experience and enjoy.
Whether you choose to fish from a boat or shore, open water or hard water, Lake of the Prairies offers angling adventures in spades. Prime fishing times for the open water angler are late May to early July. Prime fishing times for the ice angler are late November, December, early January and late March.
