Season: June to September
Best For: The quintessential fly-in lodge experience and really big fish
In the southern area of this region, a fly-in can mean a 10-minute trip from a small rural airport or a flight directly from Winnipeg that puts you in paradise within 20 minutes. The east shore of Lake Winnipeg is slashed by the Poplar, Berens, Bloodvein and Pigeon river systems, all flowing down to the lake, all plentiful with big fish. Challenge the predatory pike, the majestic lake trout or the giant sturgeon, or test your skills with natural trophy brook trout on the fly. Further to the north, follow the lead of the Hayes, Gods and Knife River systems. There are ancient and majestic waters that rarely disappoint when it comes to producing big, burly fish—whether you’re casting into a river or a lake.
Hot lure: Mepps Musky Killer for pike, two-ounce jig and rubber for lake trout
