Ice Fishing for Lake Trout at Its Best - Bakers Narrows Lodge
"Nothing could have prepared me for what I was about to witness over a few days on my first trip up north to Bakers Narrows Lodge. I have spent many days on the water, open and hard water, in search of lake trout. The hope is always to catch something worth talking about, but many lakes don’t produce the class of fish you can find around Bakers Narrows."
Arrival
When you first arrive at Bakers Narrows Lodge, one of the finest and most northern drive-to ice-fishing destinations in Northern Manitoba, you are met by a beautiful property, home to a bunch of rustic log cabins that are set back in the woods along a windy forested driveway. In the centre of the property rests the clubhouse, serving as the epicentre to all things food, gathering and relaxation for breakfast, dinner and downtime after a long day on the ice.
The Experience
Once you’ve had yourself a cozy night's sleep, the mornings start early in the clubhouse with a hardy breakfast, served by the chipper and friendly staff, then it's off to the lake with your optional pre-made lunch. From here you can decide to take your own transportation, snowmobiles are recommended, or, easily rent one of the many well-equipped snowmobiles on site. You also always have the option to hop in one of the famous Bakers snow-tanks; one is a massive converted snow-cat and the other a large tracked van, both with enough seating to transport a large crew and gear from the lodge to the fishing hole, many miles away.
The experience I had on the big lake, Lake Athapapuskow, is something that I might never experience again, but I sure hope that I do. After witnessing our crew catch multiple chunky Manitoba Master Angler lake trout, and pulling a few hardy but smaller fish through the hole myself, I started to get the itch for a true legendary trophy. I had just been part of an epic catch and assisted in landing a trophy-sized laker for a friend after I had messed up my opportunity at a few for myself. We went outside to snap a bunch of great photos and celebrate his win with the crew, then the self-pity started to settle in, just a little bit. With a smile still on my face, I shuffled my feet back to our tent to mope and take one last glance at the sonar, the one pointed straight down the hole from where this giant laker had come moments prior. I waited a moment for my eyes to adjust, did a double-take and proceeded to scramble around the tent to find my rod, untangle my line and get my bait down to bottom as fast as possible… we’ve got a mark!
Lake Trout Of A Lifetime
I knew the red blob sitting on the bottom of my screen was too good to be true. I had seen dozens of marks come through over the past few days and had a vibe for what type of fish I was dealing with. It was a big mark. Keep in mind that everyone else is still just outside the tent celebrating the previous catch, and if you know laker fishing, it’s not typically a double-header type of fishing experience. I can see my bait falling on the screen with the red mark, sitting just a foot or two off of bottom, sitting perfectly still. It felt like it took twenty minutes for that bait to fall as I kept pulling line from my reel, feeding it through the rod glides in the hope of speeding up the process. Then, finally, the two marks met each other. It didn’t take much coaxing, just a few light dingles and dangles to activate the rattle bait and my wrist was slammed by ten thousand volts of lake trout lighting; line was peeling, my palms were sweating and I swear I saw smoke come off of that reel... “Fff… f…fiiISSHH ON!!”
Through the sound of the screaming reel, I remember hearing the rapid shuffling of feet outside the tent, the zipper flying open and within seconds I was surrounded by a life coach, psychologist, that one gym teacher you had in middle school who had a confusing amount of positive energy, and lead guide at Bakers Narrows Lodge, Mac. It was a beautiful thing to see; a squad of good folks, well prepared with all of the right tools and encouraging words to say, all knelt around one hole through the floor, tossing as much positive energy as possible downward, hoping to get eyes on this heavy fish. The progress was slow, as the fish was big, but after many runs, stressful moments and some braided line jarring around the bottom of the hole, we had ourselves some bubbles and shortly after, a fish of a lifetime.
You Need To Go
If you haven't already, check out the film below created during this trip to Bakers Narrows! My best ever lake trout is in there and it is quite the sight. During this excursion to the north, our team caught an impressive amount of gigantic trout, which solidified my belief in trusting fish stories you hear from reputable folks, especially when they really start to put on the pressure, telling you “you just need to go”.
Bakers Narrows Lodge is the all-inclusive ice fishing experience you’ve been waiting for. If you’ve been there, you know what I mean. If you have yet to go, trust me.
