Trophy Black Bear Hunting in Manitoba - Whiteshell Outfitters
Bear hunting lodges are often a diverse and fun environment. Mike Adey at Whiteshell Outfitters has done a fantastic job of achieving exactly that. His bear hunting experience is unique and very complete. I had the pleasure of spending a few days at Mike’s camp in the spring bear season, and it was a very enjoyable experience.
The Location
Mike’s bear hunters stay at Jessica Lake Lodge, located in Manitoba’s Whiteshell Provincial Park. This beautiful Canadian shield has enormous rock structures and a thick dark bush, home to giant black bears. The lodge is a great home base. The cabins are extremely comfortable, with screened patios, living rooms, TVs, a hot tub, and comfortable beds. Downtime at the lodge is very relaxing.

During the Downtime
A typical day at the lodge involves a big, hearty breakfast to start the day before you have the option to head out with your guide and fish for the morning. Jessica Lake has walleye, northern pike, yellow perch, and more. Unfortunately, the week I was there, a strong cold front kept us from utilizing the fishing, but other guests said that when it’s a bit warmer, the fishing is fantastic.

The Hunting
Around noon, you’d return to camp for lunch before heading into the stand. Getting to the stand is done either by Argo or a quad bike. It’s always a fun journey getting to the tree stand, which is fun but extreme terrain. From archery to rifle, Mike has tree stands and ground blind options to suit any hunting you’re hoping to achieve. Once you get settled in, it’s time to watch bears and enjoy the show!

Powerful Memories
The group that was there at the same time as me was a group of friends that were honouring a friend who passed away sooner than he should have and was described to me as the glue to the friend group. David, one of the hunters, described the friend, Tony, as the reason why the group came to Canada to bear hunt. He was the reason, and they chose this weekend in particular because it would have been Tony’s birthday. David decided to bring his son Matthew on this trip to share the memories and experience what the trip meant.

This type of camaraderie is why I love bear-hunting camps so much. The downtime creates an environment where friends and hunting buddies can create memories that will last a lifetime. In this case, they can honour old friends, make new ones, and pass the experience down to a generation simultaneously.
Exceptional Surroundings
On your last day at camp, Mike offers a fantastic opportunity to do a day fishing trip to a local gem called Crowduck Lake. Crowduck has exceptional walleye fishing to the extent of genuinely losing count of how many you can catch in a day. Hundreds potentially. It’s a fantastic fishery and experience that involves a classic Canadian shore lunch and a great backcountry fishing adventure. It’s a great way to conclude a Canadian bear hunting trip.
